Children have their own special skin problems and needs. Some skin conditions are much more common in children than in adults. Younger children may also have difficulty expressing their symptoms, such as itching. At EDP we routinely see children of all ages for a variety of skin conditions.

  • Eczema is a common, itchy rash experienced by children of all ages. Its exact cause is unknown but it often runs in the family with seasonal allergies or asthma. It can occur anywhere on the body but especially on the cheeks and folds of the elbows or knees. It can be miserable for both the child and the whole family since itching in a young child can lead to problems with sleep. Treatment of eczema involves following a detailed regimen of gentle bathing and moisturizing, while also using medications to control the itching and symptoms when they flare.
  • Warts are a common problem for children (and sometimes adults). They are caused by a virus that is spread by physical contact between children or adults. Once warts are present, they can not only spread to others in the household, but can spread on the child as well. Although not dangerous, warts can be painful and annoying. There are many treatments for warts and we work to tailor treatment based on the child’s age and the number of warts.
  • Molluscum is another common contagious viral condition, commonly in children, which causes small clear or red bumps on the skin. They can occur anywhere and often spread quickly between members of a household or on an individual child. Although not dangerous, they can be painful and noticeable when they spread onto the face. There are many treatments for molluscum.
  • Birthmarks are commonly seen in young children and can be pigmented (brown or black) or vascular (red). Parents are often concerned about birthmarks and if treatment is needed for them. We routinely evaluate children to help parents know if a birthmark needs treatment and how to monitor them.
